John Whitehead's debut book of poetry, complete with illustrations. Paradise Motel is a poetic yet surreal look at the world. It raises a fundamental question about the nature of reality Is it all that is seems?

Paradise Motel edition by John Whitehead Joshua Whitehead Literature Fiction eBooks

I have greatly enjoyed and appreciated John's editorials for The Rutherford Institute, and was intrigued to find that he had written and illustrated a book of poetry. Downloaded it pronto, and enjoyed it very much. Mr. Whitehead has a thoughtful and sensitive perspective which combined with his high moral principles gives us a rare insight into the ubiquitous suffering endured by humanity and the obligation each of us has to render aid when and where we can.

Paradise Motel edition by John Whitehead Joshua Whitehead Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

John W. Whitehead wears a cloak of many colors - attorney, film director, painter, poet and author. In this brief ebook he examines life as though it were variations on reality, surrealism, the occult and the agony of relationships gone bad. His book PARADISE MOTEL suggests a connection to work such as the pop opera from 1990 - THE BLACK RIDER The Casting of the Magic Bullets, an immensely fascinating collaborative work from a book by William S Burroughs , music and lyrics by Tom Waits, and created for the stage by Robert Wilson. His Paradise Motel could be real or an imaginary Sartre-type gathering place for the misbegotten.

The title poem is spread throughout the book in short stanzas, flavoring the rest of the poems an dat books end the stanzas are presented as a whole, giving the Paradise Motel a sense of hopeless being. Examples from that poem

Outside in the parking lot
Two angels stand smoking.
Cigarettes ablaze in the pitch-black night
Reveal startled eyes
Beneath a damp, starless sky
As neon reflections
From the blinking sign
Bark out the crude glowing letters
Of the Paradise Motel.

Next door there's been a killing.
Two drunk men were fighting.
Jealousy, it was said at the crime scene,
Drove him to murder.
Now there is one dead brother.
The bloodstained carpet moves
Like a crimson sea,
Its waves crashing against the walls
Of the Paradise Motel.

The phones are out of order.
Nobody can call home.
In the distance the hot wind is howling,
Scraping vicious teeth
Across an infertile earth
Laid bare by human minds
And fallen angels
Who will forever reside
At the Paradise Motel.

And in the midst of this drawn out revelation, Whitehead inserts more personal moments
SHE KISSED ME AS IF I WERE A CORPSE

She kissed me
As if I were a corpse.
She pursed her lips
Like she was keeping
Death from seeping
Into her mouth.
That is when I knew
It was through.
It was over.

Whitehead illustrates his book with colorful, Munch like paintings and shares the illustration duties with the black and white quite fine drawings of Joshua Whitehead. This is a dark piece, the poetry doesn't always work well, being a bit to dependent on form than content, but as for creating a space of alternate reality it succeeds. Grady Harp, July 11
